The Cities of the Region

Make the most of the great variety of events and sights in the cities of the region. The capital of Germany, Berlin, is little more than 90 minutes away and offers a wide range of culture, entertainment and shopping. The nearby cities of Bautzen and Görlitz, with their unique historical town centres are well worth a day-trip. See for yourself the exceptional cultural and historical treasures of Dresden – for example in the Zwinger or the Art Gallery. Stroll along the Procession of Princes, visit the Semper Opera House or look at the reconstructed Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady).

“Fürst-Pückler-Land” – International Building Exhibition
The Lausitz is the showplace of a large-scale International Building Exhibition (IBA), “Fürst-Pückler-Land” to 2010. The focus is on the theme “Landscape”. During the recultivation of former mining areas, millions of cubic metres of soil were moved in this area of the Lausitz. In what was the energy centre of the GDR you now find a landscape where mountains have been moved (in the true sense of the word) and new lakes have been created. Included in this process of transformation are industrial buildings, heavy mining machinery, workers’ accommodation and large industrial areas for which new purposes are being constantly found.

Winter Sports – even at the Height of Summer
Throughout the year you can enjoy some winter activities in the nearby “Snowtropolis”. Whether snowboarding or skiing, ice hockey or skating – winter sports enthusiasts can indulge their hobbies here in all seasons. Active sportspeople may delight in natural winter sports in the nearby Iser- and Riesengebirge or in Germanys’ smallest mountain range, the Zittau Mountains, which provide ideal conditions for cross-country as well as for downhill skiing.

The Attraction of Football
It is well worth watching a Bundesliga match of FC Energie Cottbus. Experience the unique atmosphere at the Cottbus stadium when the whole region joins its team in a fever of excitement.

High Spirits at the Ice Hockey Rink
The Lausitzer Füchse Weißwasser can bring the local ice-hockey stadium to boiling point when chasing the puck at breathtaking speed – high spirits guaranteed.
